In English below José Luis Copete aloitti lintuharrastuksensa vuonna 1981 vasta 12-vuotiaana ja oli mukana lintuverkoilla jo ennen kuin omisti ensimmäisiä kiikareitaan. 1990-luvun alussa hän aloitti työt Barcelonan Luonnontieteellisessä Keskusmuseossa vihervarpusten ja keltahemppojen tutkimuksen parissa. 2002 José Luis jätti yliopistotyöt siirtyäkseen HBW-projektin (Handbook of the Birds of the World) pariin. Siellä hän on ollut mukana mm. HBW Books -projektissa, HBW-Alive -nettisivujen luomisessa, HBW:n lajiluetteloiden parissa sekä HMW-sarjan (Handbook of the Mammals of the World) toimittajana. Hän on toiminut Espanjan Rariteettikomitean puheenjohtajana 2014-2015 ja ollut mukana perustamassa monelle tuttua Reservoir Birds -sivustoa (https://www.reservoirbirds.com).   Viime vuosina hänen tutkimuksensa ovat kohdistuneet taksonomiaan sekä systematiikkaan, ja hän on työskennellyt mm. törmä- ja aasiantörmäpääskyn sekä Strix-suvun pöllöjen (Strix hadoramin kuvaaminen omaksi lajikseen vuonna 2015) tutkimuksen parissa. Iberian niemimaan ja sen lähialueen linnuista José Luis tutkii mm. rytikerttusta ja sen lähitaksoneita sekä atlaksen- ja ’iberiankirjosieppoja’ (F.h. ’iberiae’). Jonon jatkeeksi voidaan lisätä vielä työt peltosirkun ja mustapääkertun muuton ekologian sekä Phylloscopidae-suvun tutkimuksen parissa.   Copete on myös toiminut Handbook of the Western Palearctic Birds -kaksoisteoksen määrityskonsulttina ja toimitusapulaisena. Nykyään hän yhdistää työnsä Lynx Editionilla edellä mainittuihin projekteihin ja pyörittää omaa lintumatkailuun keskittynyttä yritystään Icaro Birding Experienceä (birdingicaro.com/en). Lisäksi José Luis on ollut mukana kaikille tutun Alula-lehden toimituksessa asiantuntijana.   Matkailu WP:n alueella ja sen ulkopuolella on Copetelle lähellä sydäntä. Tutkimusprojektit ovat suuntautuneet mm. Peruun, Marokkoon, Mauritaniaan ja Turkkiin. Suomessakin hän on työskennellyt kiljuhanhien parissa vuonna 1999. Kiljukashommissa on pari kevättä vierähtänyt myös Virossa sekä yksi Kazakstanissa Petro Pynnösen ja muiden suomalaisten kollegojen seurassa.   Copete on käynyt suomessa useita kertoja, mutta harmikseen kertoo vielä mm. hiiripöllön puuttuvan eliksistä! www.reservoirbirds.com birdingicaro.com/en In English: José Luis Copete began as a ringer in 1981 at the age of 12 years. Before having bins, he already was handling birds. He collaborated with the Museum of Zoology of Barcelona during the early 90s, when working on behavioural ecology of Siskins and Serins, while at the same time was focusing on field and in the hand identification of passerines. In 2002 he left the university, where he was working, to enter on the HBW project. He has been working on HBW books, the digital HBW-Alive, the two volumes of the HBW Checklist, and the HMW series as editor, combining this with research projects and identification papers. He was chairman of the Spanish RC during 2014-2015. He’s also one of the founding members of the Spanish website Reservoir Birds (https://www.reservoirbirds.com). Last years his research interests were focused on taxonomy and systematics, having been involved in research about Sand and Pale Sand Martins, Strix owls (describing Strix hadorami in Zootaxa in 2015), Eurasian Reed Warblers and related taxa, Atlas and Iberian Pied Flycatchers, and the Phylloscopidae family. Also participating on research about ecology of migration in some species like Ortolan Bunting, Blackcap, and others. He was also an identification consultant and editorial assistant for the recent Handbook of Western Palearctic Birds, Volumes I & II. Nowadays he combines his regular job as editor for Lynx Edicions on the mentioned projects, as well running his own birding company Icaro Birding Experience (birdingicaro.com/en). He has been travelling extensively around the WP, as well as on other continents, sometimes for plain birding, other times under research projects, like sampling trips to Peru, Morocco, Mauritania or Turkey. He has a Finnish connection from 1999, when he participated on the Lesser White-fronted Geese conservation project, two springs in Estonia and one in Kazakhstan, together with Petro Pynnönen and other Finnish colleagues.
